CoD4 Weapons: M60 Guide

Back to Light Machine Guns

Guide by Gmaat3 - I'm here to give out some tips on how to succeed with the M60E4 LMG. This is my first guide but I'll try to be as complete as possible.

Basics: The M60E4 is the most powerful fully automatic weapon in the game, but happens to  have a rather sluggish rate of fire. Its maximum damage without stopping power is 50, while its minimum is 40. 40 happens to be the maximum damage for the RPD, so even when doing minimum damge with the M60E4, you're still as powerful as the RPD.

Attachments: The M60E4 can get 3 attachments. The red dot sights, the grip, and the ACOG scope.

The red dot sights are always a helpful and useful attachment, no matter the gun. The red dot sights are very useful for this gun considering the iron sights are so terrible. It makes aiming much easier for targets you cannot reach hip-firing. If you don't know what to use, the red dot sights are always a nice choice for this gun.

Next is the grip. The grip is helpful to an extent, but has its downsides. The grip reduces recoil which is always appreciated on a gun that has poor recoil. The two downsides are that perk 1 is replaced, and that the iron sights are pretty terrible with the M60E4. But, if the recoil of the M60E4 gets to you, and you can work the with iron sights, use the grip.

Last there is the ACOG scope. My favorite attachment for this gun. The ACOG adds a lot of range which is great for targets are a distance. Although the recoil is still bad with the ACOG, if you burst fire, you will be fine. Also, if you decide not the burst fire and prefer the spam method, the random recoil can really help get headshots are targets at a distance, making that effort for Red Tiger a bit easier. A great attachment for this gun.

Perks: The M60E4 has multiple perks that are perfect for this gun, and some that you should just avoid.

For perk 1 the choice is pretty much yours but here are 2 suggestions.
RPG: The RPG x2 perk is always pretty universal in its function. Great for shooting down helicopters, or for just blasting into crowded areas.

3x Frags: One of the best perks on the game. Having 3 frags instead of 1 can really help you to keep killing people and clearing out areas. This is the perk I use on all the LMGs.

For perk 2 I have 3 strong recommendations.
Stopping Power: The best perk on the game. Increases the M60E4's maximum damage to 75 making it even more deadly. Once you put this on you'll find that even against mobs of people in close range, you'll always have a chance. I once cleared out a whole building of 5 people in less than 10 seconds with this gun and stopping power as my perk 2.

Double Tap: The M60E4 has a slow rate of fire, so if you feel like you need more, than double tap is for you. With double tap, there is a very noticable difference with rate of fire. One problem, you start to run down ammo pretty fast with double tap, especially if you hip-fire and spam a lot.

Sleight of Hand: The M60E4 shares with the RPD the worst reload time on the game, and there is nothing worse than to run out of ammo on an LMG, start to reload and then get shot at because it takes too long. Cut the time in half with sleight of hand and get back in the battle significantly faster.

Note: Someone will probably mention something about UAV Jammer so I'll explain right now. I consider UAV Jammer to be one of the "useless" perks for the M60E4. Here is why. UAV Jammer is often used for ghost classes, people that ideally don't want to ever show up on radar. You cannot silence the M60E4 or any LMG for that matter, so you are going to show up on radar, like it or not. Also, ghost classes are usually submachine guns are assault rifles, that have much more mobility than the LMGs. So an M60E4 class with UAV Jammer and Dead silence/extreme conditioning would pretty much do nothing for you. I've found since sprinting is so slow with this gun, it is better to just walk around the whole map. That way, you can always get the first shot off if you encounter anyone.

I only have 2 suggestions for perk 3, but I'd be surprised if I saw anyone with something other than these 2.
Steady Aim: Steady Aim is your best friend when using the M60E4, or anyone LMG really. It helps those awful crosshairs so you can dominate while hip-firing. Partner stopping power and steady aim with this gun at shipment and you can become pretty much unstoppable. (For that note, any LMG can dominate at shipment with SP and SA. Plus no reloading is awesome).

Deep Impact: Next is deep impact. With this perk, anyone behind a wall is pretty much helpless to your M60E4. Pretty straightforward. Only downside is you have to work with poor crosshairs.

Maps: The M60E4 can be played on just about any map because of the good range and high power. Using SP and SA makes this gun great even in close combat. Shipment is my favorite map for this gun, and any other LMGs.

Red Tiger: Until I got good with this gun, I had 47 headshots for a long time, and would go back and forth between all the attachments, and many of the perks. I decided upon ACOG scope, 3x Frags, stopping power, and steady aim as my class. Hip-firing with steady aim and any non-grip attachment excel for headshots. The recoil brings your shots up near the head and frequently get you the headshot. ACOG scope is the best attachment in my opinion for headshots. Random recoil causes for some not-so-accurate shots at distance, but if you spam long enough at the target, you can often nail the guy in the head. With class I got the final 103 headshots in less than a week and a half.

Final word: So I hope you found this guide helpful for those of you that may be unsure about this gun. I wish you all good luck if you decide to use some of my tips, and remember, have fun playing this game. Nothing worse than being angry which leads to bad rounds.
