PC CoD4 gamers, remember this.

Ok this happened to me three times now, so I thought I would warn people about this!

If for some reason your PC needs to be reformated (as in deleting everything and reinstalling your operating system) your CoD4 online account will be gone!

The reason for this is because your account is stored on your PC, not online.

The best way to counter this is to periodically backup the "mpdata" file (which is only about 9 kb)

(This can be found usually in C:\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\players\profiles\*YourCoD4Name*)

Then after you back it up, zip it and try to either put it on a disk by burning it onto a CD, or save it somewhere online. Maybe send it to your email account, or upload it somewhere safe.

In case you ever have to reformat your PC, you won't lose your CoD4 account.

Sad to say, JUST last night my PC had to be reformated due to some weird windows XP problem , and I totally forgot to backup my CoD4 profile.

Now I have to restart once again from level 1. Goodbye level 55 account, for the second time.

I hope this helps people in the future. From now on I am going to be backing up my "profiles" folder often.

You may also place your game on an external hard drive that is independent of your PC. When you set it up run the game from your external hard drive instead of the PC and you won't have that problem.

rather than formatting your pc you could try (if XP), just reinstalling the OS.  You can delete the Windows folder when asked in the setup process.  This will keep your program files folder intact.

Might want to post some reasoning behind your claim...

PC has better controls, and can run the game better depending on the PC, not to mention all the stuff you can do on a PC than a console...then you have the in-game console (on the PC) that lets you alter settings on PC you couldn't on a console, being able to moderate your servers and mods too...

The only thing that I wish the PC had that the console versions have is leaderboards. I don't get why IW didn't include them...it's nice to fight for the top 10.

Vancha, can you point me to a link that will help me get into the drop down (pc) console and edit my game-config?  I am use to using tilda key in other games for my pc.  Cant seem to do that with COD4, or maybe i need to press more keys?

You need to enable the console in the game options menu, then tilde will work.

Hey Everyone: If you are running Vista and have UAC enabled that path WON'T WORK
.
  With UAC enabled (Visat only) the path is:

C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\profiles\<your profile name>

it will backup all your profiles and cfgs including saved games you can  change the save location to anything you want, but you will have to make the dir by hand, the one below is for vista

i had to format my computer once (fortunetly i dint have cod4 at the time) i was so freekin pissed i wuold have payed a lot of money to get it back and if it happens gain i mights just kill myself (just kiddin bout the suicide)
