Activision has officially confirmed that a fifth installment in the Call of Duty series is on the way - revealing that it'll be set in "a new military theatre". What this essentially means is that we won't be revisiting anywhere we've been already in the series. So not in the Middle East or Russia or Continental Europe.

Like COD4 it'll be released for PC, PS3, Xbox 360 and DS. And this time round there will be PS2 and Wii versions, too.

The news came in a conference call after Activision published its latest financial results, as reported by Gamespot. CEO Mike Griffith told listeners, "We'll bring the intensity of the recent Call of Duty: Modern Warfare title to a new military theatre, to engage our significantly larger user base which nearly doubled last year as new users came into the franchise."

The publisher has yet to give a release date for Call of Duty 5, or confirm whether Infinity Ward or Treyarch are developing. But seeing as the last COD game IW made sold over 7 million copies worldwide to date, it seems likely Activision have taken on board the success of CoD4.

So a bit of hope. It still seems likely that it'll be a Pacific WWII shooter, though it's still yet to be confirmed, but IW could be given the task over Treyarch.

I hope IW are given the task over Treyarch. That way we know we'll be expecting a game of CoD4's quality and highly-successful online mode at least. And the news that we won't be playing over the ever repeated WWII battles again is nice to hear, even if I do prefer a modern setting overall.

Let's pray that IW makes it.  It'll bomb otherwise and everyone will stick to playing CoD4.  Not that that's a bad thing, but I'd rather have the next installment be awesome.  D:

I think we should give Treyarch a chance to match the bar that IW has set...if they fail to reach it, then by all means I'd be happy with IW doing every CoD.

Any idea if a lot of cod4's game concepts (custom classes, perks, ect) will be carried over to 5?

Well it was stated a while ago that CoD5 will be using the same game engine as CoD4, so maybe (and hopefully!). Smiley

They'd be fools not to take things from CoD4, when it's so obviously a formula for a successful game.

I have np w/ a new game but if the graphics/gameplay and stuff are not not going to be taken to another level than that of COD4 then I think it will kind of flop. I am not saying that it will not be a good game just that compared to COD4 it may not be up to par and the clan community will be more comfortable w/ COD4 and just may keep playin that instead. COD4 appears to have a very significant shelf life and if they want a game to unseed it as the top game going then they are going to have to do something different. Hell, even if they came out w/ the same game and added vehicles like the BF series w/ the armor, light vehicles, helos, and jets then they may surpass COD4 w/o the graphics/gameplay improvements. This is something the clan community would really grasp on to IMO. I personally like the infantry heavy type games but I know alot of clan players that really like all the other aspects of battle as well. I would like to see COD4 go on for a couple of years myself and be supported w/ patches/expansions like they stated they would do.....

Yeah, I am hoping it will be just as good as CoD4. They could get creative with the weapon attachments and perks.

If it was any other game, the WWII aspect would turn me off it completely...but seeing as it should be better than CoD4 in all but the time that it's set, I'll give it a try if I hear good things.

I think the perk/attachment system will be a requirement, it's probably one of the main reasons CoD4's so popular, so much better than the class system.
