According to reports from Videogaming247, Call of Duty 5 will be officially titled Call of Duty: World at War and will indeed take place in the previously rumoured Pacific theatre of World War II.

News comes following the latest issue of UK publication, GamesTM, which was distributed to subscribers of the magazine earlier this morning.

GamesTM later discovered further details regarding the title;

-The game is touted as being as "gritty" as anything out there, with enemies far smarter than before, capable of using a selection of new tactics to get to you.

-Call of Duty: World at War will be released on PS3, PC, Xbox 360 and Wii.

-Co-op will be included for the first time in the series, and the multiplayer component will feature vehicles and various squad-based elements.

-A description of the opening scene in the first level is as follows: "‘The opening scene of the first level we are shown is a Japanese commander stubbing a cigarette out in the eye of a prisoner before slitting his throat - the blood splatters and dribbles down the side of the tent you are being held in. He turns towards you to deal out the same treatment but help arrives just in time. Cue a daring level-long escape.’”

Excited much? Smiley

Big Update

Some screens of the game in action and some promotional pictures have surfaced;
(they're pretty big so you can see the writing on them)

Click each screenshot to see it's full size.

Yes that's right, a flamethrower.  Shocked

A few more tidbits:

-The player is able to shoot through cover, “with enough bullets, the player causes enough damage to one of the walls to create a hole big enough to walk through.” - So similar to BF: Bad Company's 'Frostbite' engine, then.

-The game allows you to swim for the first time in the series, although movement will be severely limited, with your character only capable of walking at half speed.

-The game will feature a four-player online co-op mode, in addition to a two-player split screen co-op mode.

-COD 5 incorporates a “metagame” scoring system, whereby your earn points to unlock special co-op perks.

-One demo showcased one player attracting the attention of an enemy tank, while another proceeds to climb on top and throws a grenade into its hatch, killing its occupants.

-16 players online up to any one time.

-Game utilizes COD4 engine, "Environments are much destructible, it's possible to burn objects or blow them to pieces. Bodies and objects float in water. Impressive lighting."

-Lead development platform is Microsoft's Xbox 360.

-Two year development schedule.

A note from X: We will be covering CoD5 on this site as much as we cover CoD4. More info on this will be released soon. Many site updates are also on the way this week. So stay tuned.

First level description? Good. Multiplayer vehicles? Bad.

CoD4 + CS have both been far more successful than the Battlefield series, one of the reasons for that is no vehicles imo.

Still, looking foward to seeing what comes from Treyarch in this installment.

 Sad   WHY!!!!!! Why the hell would you go back to WWII after the huge success that MW was. I mean, sure people will buy it, but it won't be as eagerly anticipated and online will certainly be worse than CoD4. I mean, WHy go back - What we all want is the Modern!!

I agree, good news that a new game is coming out but I'll probably stick with the modern weapons, I like my G3 too much to go back in time!

Trying to get 150 headshots with the MP44 so I could get my gold AK was bad enough.

Thanks for the info though Cyn.
